Sophie found herself on the Aurora, Inc. company jet for the second time in a week, this time transporting most of the family from Paris to Avignon. Christophe had explained that they would be picked up in two separate limousines in Avignon, and then make the drive to the château from there.

She’d lived a privileged life, but this sort of thing was a definite novelty. She’d brought her suitcase—she planned to head home tomorrow afternoon now—and found herself joining the jovial atmosphere of the family in private, rather than the slightly more formal Pembertons in the social sphere.

There were eight of them all together: Gabi and Will, Bella and Burke, Stephen and Aurora, and Christophe and Sophie. Charlotte was still resting and adjusting to motherhood back in Richmond, but once they were in the air Aurora set up a video call so they could all say hello and see Imogene, who was definitely looking less pink and wrinkled and more plump and adorable. Sophie stared at her tiny nose and nearly translucent eyelids, and Charlotte’s tired but blissful expression. In a few months this would be her, holding her precious baby in her arms. Her heart melted a bit, and she surreptitiously touched her tummy. Her baby was in there. Growing, developing, becoming a little person. She’d been so caught up in her body’s changes and the situation that she hadn’t had much time to really think about how miraculous it all was. And how scared but excited she was, too.

She looked over and caught Christophe watching her, a tender smile on his face. For the first time, she let her hopes have their freedom. She wished this was different. Wished that he were the father and that this wasn’t all for show. He was so kind, so funny, so supportive. And the way he’d hugged her last night... She’d felt safe, comforted. It had reminded her of those tough times her parents had shared when Mum had been going through chemo, and how she’d often come across her father offering a supportive embrace.

There’d been something else, too.

For a moment last night, she’d thought he’d been about to kiss her, and in that moment, she would have let him. But she couldn’t let those thoughts in. They were friends. And he’d made it very clear that marriage and a family life weren’t for him.

Any thoughts of Christophe had to be put aside, no matter how much she might want them to come true.
